UVI – World Suite 2Īnother one that came out this year and only a month prior to Phoenix Orchestra is UVI’s update to the highly popular World Suite. There are no pre-recorded phrases, as everything is completely playable. All of the instruments are recorded with up to 4 mic positions and each one of them features traditional playing techniques, dynamic articulations, swells and ornaments that are characteristic of these types of instruments. The results are simply astonishing as this library captures the exceptional playing mastery of Ding Yi Music Company recorded in Thailand at Karma Studios. Gu Zheng, Dizi, Xiao, Erhu and Zhonghu are only a few of the instruments available.Īside from having twenty-one individual instruments sampled, this collection also offers seven instrument ensembles as well as four ethnic orchestral sections. It features an ethnic orchestra recorded in Situ position (with players in traditional seating arrangement), and comes with a plethora of various plucked instruments, woodwinds, bowed instruments and percussion at your fingertips.

Phoenix Orchestra is a collection of ethnic instruments from China and this library was specifically created for Harry Gregson-Williams’ score for Disney’s Mulan. Orchestral Tools are best-known for their top-notch orchestral libraries and they really went out of their “comfort zone” with this one. Phoenix Orchestra came out during September this year and it is a collaboration between Orchestral Tools, Richard Harvey and Harry Gregson-Williams. These libraries will surely fit the need for any historical, epic fantasy or world music production challenge you are dealing with. There weren’t a lot of releases this year so we had an idea to scout for some of the best ones that are available at the moment. I DO have Dark Era which has two tagelharpas, but they dont go as low as I would wish (and how low real tagelharpa actually goes).Ethnic instruments are a mandatory tool in the arsenal of every composer out there working on fantasy or period-based soundtracks. Here is the way I see it in my own opinionusage at this current time.Īfter listening to demos, reviews, and walkthroughs on YouTube (potential buyers should do this for any instruments theyre interested in, especially for new virtual instruments that you cant demo), if someone decides they want it, Id say to make sure to also have bigger libraries (i.e. Tuning samples down and up two or three octaves is not a selling argument. I wish I had the 1.2 update to know whether new content has been added (Im sure there is), and if the player functionality has improved. Unlike Dark ERA, there are no loops or rhythmic pads, or keyswitches that play a drum pattern, etc.īut I definitely think each of these instruments have the possibility to add to the authenticity of composing various Old NorseVikingScandinavian songs when used with Dark ERA. What I do like about the Asgard Sampler are the Textures Nature FX and especially the Bullroarers Ravens, and a few other instruments that arent in other libraries.ĭark ERA has bullroarers, but I havent found anything that has the sounds of ravens until I got this sampler.

Ive tried using the contact form from the website over this past year to find out how to get the updates, but I never get a reply back. Im still at version 1.0, and the sampler is at 1.2, so the content andor player may be improved from what I have.

However, on the Danheim website it is states that: You also get all future updates for free which includes new presets and sounds, improvements and bug fixes. I plan to make a Nordic album in the future, and in combination with Dark ERA there is a lot of content. I mean, you can convince yourself that its OK because theres a didgeridoo in Dark Era and that works, and the Vikings conquered Singapore.Īnd that sound is some kind of folk zither or lute If I needed to get that sound today, Id try to borrow a mandolin and tune it down a lot. Beyond that, youre looking at piecing things together from I guess VSL Historic Winds, and borrowing instruments from other ethnic libraries. Interesting percussion, but other than that it seems like a smaller, less deep Dark Era.Īny other libs to fit the bill And what is this at 4:28 Its the strumming thing, that sounds almost like a guitar, but not quite.
